Se aplica una capa de cromo sobre metal o alg\u00fan material no met\u00e1lico por electr\u00f3lisis o m\u00e9todo qu\u00edmico, lo que se denomina cromado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La capa cromada tiene alta dureza, y su dureza puede variar dentro de un amplio rango de 400-1200HV seg\u00fan la composici\u00f3n de la soluci\u00f3n de revestimiento y las condiciones del proceso. La capa cromada tiene una buena resistencia al calor. Cuando se calienta por debajo de 500 \u00b0C, su brillo y dureza no sufren cambios evidentes. Cuando la temperatura es superior a 500 \u00b0C, empieza a oxidarse y decolorarse, y cuando es superior a 700 \u00b0C, la dureza empieza a disminuir. El coeficiente de fricci\u00f3n de la capa de cromo es peque\u00f1o, especialmente el coeficiente de fricci\u00f3n en seco, que es el m\u00e1s bajo entre todos los metales.
